4D Photography Shows Breast Asymmetry Among Augmented Women in 100% of cases!

Believe it or not; there is a 100 percent chance that you can develop some degree of breast asymmetry after a breast augmentation procedure. Yes, it’s really true, says a study published in the July 2011 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the official journal of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Chest wall and soft tissue analysis as part of the preoperative planning for breast augmentation procedure is a practice not performed by most plastic surgeons. Thus, the researchers of this study evaluated the incidence of breast asymmetries as a result of the asymmetry of the chest wall and the soft tissues of the original, non-augmented breasts. They have recruited 125 patients to have a voluntary dimensional analysis by a single practicing aesthetic surgeon. His findings were then confirmed using 4D photography. During the evaluation of the patients’ breasts, the examinang doctor recorded the following measurements: distance of both nipples to their corresponding inframammary fold, distance of the breast bone to the nipple, horizontal areolar width and height of both the areolas. Of all the patients recruited for the study, 117 patients were able to make it in the final analysis. Significant difference between the two breasts were noted in 81.7 percent of patients. In most cases, 4D photography confirmed the manual measurements of the examining physician. However, chest wall asymmetries identified by 4D photography was missed during manual examination. In fact, in 100 percent of all the women who joined this study, in this is particularly true.

Thus, the researchers concluded that including 4D photography measurements is necessary to have a more consistent and more symmetrical preoperative breast examination. Developing a more systematic analysis of the chest wall and the breast soft tissues before the operation is important to have a much better outcome.
