Obesity: An Added Risk for Breast Augmentation Procedures?
Published:July 5th, 2011Are you having problems with being overweight? Are you contemplating to have a breast surgical operation? Yes? Then, better listen to this breaking news:
Obesity can increase the odds of elective breast surgical procedure postoperative complications by twelve-folds and it can possibly worsen surgical outcomes, suggests a new study conducted by a team of scientists from Departments of Surgery1 and Medicine2, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and published by journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in June 2011.
Obesity has altered the results of many surgical procedures within the last few decades. In fact, it has made simple operation confounded and complicated. However, despite anecdotal claims of some surgeons, the real score of complications related to surgery is still unaccounted for.
In this particular study, the researchers identified a population of obese and non-obese patients who received breast procedures from the 2002 to 2006. They then compared and analyzed the cases of those who had surgical complications. After which, using multivariate logistic regression, they tried to determine to possible surgical complication rates in the presence of obesity.
And what did they find? 2,403 cases of obese patients received breast procedures. In this particular population, 80.7 percent had breast reduction, 10.3 percent had breast reconstruction, 1.5 percent had mastopexy with breast augmentation, 3.5 percent had mastopexy alone and 4 percent had breast augmentation alone. The rate of surgical complication occurrence in this obese group was then compared with the non-obese control group who received the same procedure. All in all, obese patients had 18.3 percent rate of complications compared to 2.2 percent in the non-obese group.
Their conclusion? Obesity do have a great effect when it comes to postoperative breast complications. Therefore, obese patients who desire to have breast procedures should first be advised to lose some weight before having the surgical operation. This way, the rate of possible complications can be greatly diminished.
