Saline Breast Implants

Published:October 16th, 2010

When a patient receives surgery to receive breast augmentation, breast implants composed of saline are one of the available breast implant options. They other options are soybean oil and silicone implants.

Saline implants are available in different sizes and shapes and are composed of a silicone shell that can be either filled with saline during the procedure or come pre-filled with the solution.

Although silicone and saline implants are both popular, most individuals find that silicone is more natural and more accurately mimics actual breast tissue. In contrast, saline implants are more likely to leak solution and wrinkle.
However, one positive aspect of saline implants is the fact that these types of implants are less likely to lead to capsular contracture, which is the formation of scar tissue. In addition, the leak of saline is far less toxic to the body than a leak of silicone.

However, it would be unwise to ignore the risks of receiving saline implants. A leak can lead to asymmetry of the breasts, loss of sensation in the nipples, deflation of the breasts, as well as infections.

In addition, the results of the implants are not permanent and they will most likely need to be removed at some point and replaced due to possible rupturing or other issues. In addition, augmentation of the breasts with saline implants is not covered by an individual’s health insurance which, in combination with follow-up examinations, can become incredibly costly.

There are some alternatives to the use of implants for those who do not wish to risk complications or pay the high fees which accompany the surgery. This includes natural breast enhancement which has become more popular with studies showing that herbal supplementation has been effective in the enhancing of the size of the breasts. More research is required but, so far, the studies have shown the results to be promising.

Make sure that you discuss treatments with the physician before pursuing any surgical procedure. He or she will discuss the various options in order to make a correct decision.
